It was in her ninth grade when she began to gain confidence following her acclaim during an audition. The experience not only boosted her self-confidence but also changed the direction she wanted to go in her career. The 22-year-old graduated with a degree from the Julliard School in New York. In 1993 she made her Broadway debut with Paul Simon's The Capeman. Her first film was called You've Got Mail. The role of The lad from The Lake is her biggest break, earning herself an award called the Tony Award in addition to praise from critics for her role. The following year, she appeared on the ABC show Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Callie Torres and gained wider acceptance for the role. She is a popular singer. she has also recorded a song and a play. She is an activist who is a tireless advocate for LGBT equality.
